Outpatient Counseling in Dallas

What is Outpatient Counseling?

Outpatient counseling at Visions Adolescent Treatment Centers consists of various treatment programs and therapies that serve adolescents with mental health, substance abuse or co- occurring disorders. The goal of the treatment program is to teach teens and their loved ones the skills necessary for living a healthy lifestyle, free from their afflictions. Using individual, group and family therapy, residents and their families are able to better understand their condition and apply it to a normal livelihood. At Visions, we provide two structured outpatient counseling programs that help teens integrate themselves into everyday life while also preserving their individuality.

The 1st Step Program

Our 1st Step Program acts an an introduction for our residents and their families into outpatient counseling. During the eight weeks of clinical support, residents begin to understand their new treatment process while their families offer support and determine possible next steps for treatment. Residents will participate in one individual therapy session, one group therapy session and one family session, along with drug testing, that each work to unpack the intricacies of their disorder and adjust their lifestyles accordingly.

Intensive Outpatient Program

For residents struggling with substance abuse or co-occurring disorders, intensive programming is available as a specialized option. The Visions staff, residents and families work together to find the best-suited therapeutic option for residents and create avenues of support within their families. The intensive outpatient program at Visions involves one year of clinical support, which includes one to two months of primary care, three to six months of continuing care and seven to twelve months of aftercare, as well as individual, family and multi-modal group therapy sessions. Adolescents who are recovering from drug addiction may also participate in a 12-step program and drug testing.

Family Therapy

At Visions, we encourage the participation of a resident’s family in order to better assist with recovery. Family involvement by use of multi-family group therapy, individual family sessions and family education can create a space of understanding and empathy during treatment. Family therapy helps everyone involved to acknowledge the presence of a disorder, understand how it impacts quality of life and apply this understanding to a healthy and positive lifestyle. With support from members of the family, residents can facilitate their recovery not only on the Visions campus, but at home as well.

Goals of Outpatient Counseling

Not only does outpatient counseling provide various therapy options for adolescents, but the staff at Visions also helps residents find positive resources in their community and formulate healthy relationships with peer groups. Building affirmative relationships helps our residents complete their treatment goals, which include:

  • Motivation to lead a healthy lifestyle
  • Acquired problem-solving skills
  • A change in habits that lead to relapse
  • Recognizing and accepting destructive behaviors and the impact they have
  • Reduced dysfunction in familial environments
  • Identifying negative coping methods and finding positive ones
  • Meeting medical needs
  • Meeting psychiatric needs

The goals of treatment vary depending on whether residents are being treated for their mental health, substance abuse or co-occurring disorder, and some additional goals may include support through various 12-step programs, addressing legal issues and maintaining sobriety. Residents will also determine their own goals for post-treatment, which may include desires for employment, education or family wellbeing.

Receiving Treatment at Visions

Outpatient counseling includes a large staff of certified and experienced professionals who want to support residents throughout their journey toward recovery. Our team consists of licensed therapists, a psychiatrist, psychologists, counselors, medical doctors, dietitians and art therapists who all use the multi-modal approach to stimulate results. Upon entering treatment, residents are assigned a counselor who they will meet with regularly throughout their recovery. Residents also interact with many of our other professionals during their time at Visions.

Once a psychosocial, substance abuse or psychiatric assessment is completed, which typically occurs one or two weeks after a resident’s arrival, a treatment plan in created that addresses the resident’s specific needs along with their goals for treatment. Residents are able to review their treatment plan with their counselor and establish a full understanding of their treatment. A schedule is created for our residents of all of the services they will participate in to ensure organization, and their activities include frequent interactions with our staff to facilitate their rehabilitation. All counseling services are administered by trained staff who each report to the Program Director at Visions, and programs may include goal-setting groups, individual therapy, group sessions, stress management, art therapy and more.

When outpatient counseling is complete, a discharge and aftercare plan is created by the resident’s personal counselor as well as the treatment staff. The plan is based on a resident’s performance during treatment and addresses continuing care that a resident may need once they leave treatment. Residents may require certain social interactions, academic assistance, 12-step programming or psychiatric care. The plan provides resources for residents outside of Visions to keep them on a path toward recovery. Residents also have the options of joining the Visions Alumni Program, The Fourth Dimension to further enhance their learning.
