Mental Health Treatment in Dallas

The treatment of mental health issues is one of the primary concerns we focus on at Visions Adolescent Treatment Centers. We start treatment by assessing our residents’ mental, emotional and behavioral wellbeing in order to design the most comprehensive treatment plan, and our goal is to help our residents return to a more positive state so that they can become a contributing member of society. We look beyond what an inpatient treatment center can provide, and use a multi-modal approach to expose residents to positive community resources and healthy peer groups. By focusing on treating mental illness, the staff at Visions can create the means of a successful recovery.

What’s Involved in Mental Health Treatment?

One of the first steps in addressing mental health issues is the administration of evaluations services, which analyze psychosocial, substance abuse and psychiatric factors to determine how mental health will impact a resident’s treatment process. The assessments look at the medical, family and employment histories of each individual as well as their drug and alcohol use, social and educational functioning, legal troubles and developmental history. Most evaluations are performed one to two weeks after the resident arrives for treatment and use a variety of methods to obtain necessary information. Each of our staff members gain applicable knowledge about how to interact with each resident and facilitate their treatment needs.

The mental health services that we provide combine counseling and family services, medical treatment and adjunct services in order to promote a holistic approach to the recovery process. Our licensed therapists, medical doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists each have the training and experience necessary to assist residents through adversity and support them during their growth.

Addressing Mental Health Issues at Visions

After detoxification, teens transition into our recovery program, which works specifically to treat mental health and substance abuse disorders. Part of creating a successful treatment method is establishing goals for residents to adhere to, which helps keep them focused and motivated. Some of the key components and goals of our mental health services include:

  • Providing the necessary medical treatment for the resident either through referral or our own staff.
  • Providing the appropriate psychological and psychiatric care for the resident as determined by evaluations.
  • Involving family members during treatment in order to improve an understanding of the treatment process and alleviate family dysfunction.
  • Creating new and more effective coping mechanisms while recognizing why previous coping strategies were harmful.
  • Developing positive means of communication and attitude adjustments that increase the success of treatment.
  • Promoting healthy lifestyle changes that lead to long-term wellness, like dieting and physical activity.

Additionally, residents are given access to positive community resources and encouraged to establish healthy personal relationships, which aid in the recovery process.

Treating Co-Occurring Disorders

Oftentimes, individuals with mental health disorders will cope with their condition by abusing drugs and alcohol. The opposite situation may also occur where the use of drugs and alcohol can enable issues with mental lucidity. Regardless of how the disorders occur, those with mental health issues are at a greater risk of developing a dependence on drugs and alcohol. When drug use and mental health correspond, we refer to these conditions as co-occurring disorders.

To effectively treat co-occurring disorders, therapy must be implemented that targets both conditions simultaneously. Since substance abuse and mental health are both affecting the individual, it is important not to isolate one condition from the other. The multi-modal approach employed by Visions is designed to help those with addiction and mental health disorders overcome their conditions and learn to live a fulfilling life. We focus on building a lifestyle of long-term health that combats the need for drugs and alcohol.

The Importance of Family Involvement

Not only do mental health issues affect the individual, but family is impacted as well. At Visions, we require that the family be involved in the treatment process so that they may gain a deeper understanding of the therapeutic process. Family therapy options like multi-family group sessions, individual family sessions and family education help a resident’s loved ones create an environment of safety and support at home. Many teens feel isolated at home, and their families can have a difficult time communicated with them. Loved ones often express feeling helpless, angry and anxious when interacting with their teen, but through therapy, families can begin to gain a sense of hope, acceptance and awareness. Engaging in family therapy can open a dialogue about about mental health and the ways to be an advocate for recovery. It also allows different families to come together and share their common experiences.
