I Spent Christmas In Rehab

DRUG REHAB

I remember one Christmas where I was so loaded that the nutcrackers started walking around during dinner and I couldn't look up from my plate. Then there was that other year that I threw a tantrum and locked myself in the bathroom through dinner. Oh, and that other year where I nodded out for most of the day on prescription drugs and later threw up in the front yard. Ah, memories. It seems like the holidays tend to bring out the beast in active addicts, for one reason or another. My addiction really put a damper on the holidays for myself, and also for my family. It became a time that we all dreaded, rather than looked forward to.

Then one Christmas, I got sent to rehab. I wasn’t too excited to spend the holidays in rehab, as you can imagine, but at the time, it ended up being the best holiday my family or I had had in years. Instead of a car, or a pony, or a new ipod, I got the gift of recovery. Thumbs down, I thought. Totally lame. I didn’t want to do the crafts, I didn’t want to go to group, and I surely didn’t want to stop using drugs and alcohol, but as time went on, I began to change despite myself. The staff’s patience and love gave me the room and tools to find the best, truest version of myself. I’ve had some really good holidays in Jackson Hole, Wyoming since then, all thanks to that one year I got to go to rehab for Christmas.

The Betty Ford Family Program Saved My Life!

TEEN DRUG TREATMENT

I know that my parents had a really hard time sending me to teen drug and alcohol rehab. They shared with me later that they had felt like they had somehow failed as parents and that my drug and alcohol abuse was somehow their fault. I have met a lot of drug addicts in the last few years and I have come to the conclusion that while nurture may play a part in things, nature is also heavily responsible. My parents were great. My home life was great. I was given a great foundation and yet I became a drug addict. I had a genetic predisposition to alcoholism and addiction. I don’t think it would have mattered what they gave me; something in me craved a way to change the way I felt inside. I don’t know what created that feeling. I don’t particularly care. What I care about is focusing on the solution.
When I was in treatment, my parents took the advice of Visions’ counselors and sought help for themselves and they attended the family program at Betty Ford in Palm Springs. My insanity put a great deal of strain on my family and it was vital that they took care of themselves too. I had run my parents ragged with the fear and guilt and anger that saturated our relationship. I terrorized them. They went to counseling and learned to create strong boundaries with me. At first I was angry and resistant, but now I see that they had to protect themselves from my insanity. My parents are stronger today, and so am I. Our relationship is deeper and stronger than most of my peers and their parents’ bonds. I broke the trust in my family and it has been up to me to build it back. It was a long and sometimes painful process for all of us, but today it is clear that it all grew from love. I have an amazing family, and they think I’m an amazing kid. I am so grateful for what we share today, and that they were there to help me on this journey. Please click here for more information about teen drug rehab.

Teen Drug and Alcohol Rehab

TEEN DRUG AND ALCOHOL REHAB

In a recent survey, forty percent of teens report that they can find marijuana within a day, and over two-thirds of those adolescents surveyed said that drugs are sold, kept, and used at their school. One in five teens say that they can get prescription drugs within an hour and that their own homes and friends are how they get them.
When I was abusing prescription drugs, I regularly went into my friend’s parents bathrooms and went through their medicine cabinets in Corpus Christi. I usually found something I wanted to abuse, like sedatives or painkillers. Medicine cabinets in the suburbs were like candy stores to me. No one seemed to suspect what my friends and I were up to until it was too late.
Prescription drug abuse is rapidly becoming the number one drug of choice for teens because of their widespread availability, lack of social stigma, and the misperception that pill forms of drugs aren’t as dangerous or addictive. One expert recommends having your child’s physician do a drug test at their yearly physical in order to determine drug abuse that may be going undetected. If you find that your teen is indeed abusing prescription drugs, teen drug rehab is an effective way of helping teens find ways to live clean and sober.
Because teens adapt so easily and become addicted so quickly, it is important to address the issue in a big way. I had to be removed from my old life in order to see just how bad it had actually become. Teen drug rehab gave me the space, time, and safety to deal with the issues that led me to use, and to find new ways to live free of drug use. It was hard admitting I was a drug addict at 16, but doing so has given me a whole life to be free, and I can be anything I want. I certainly didn’t have a future when I was using.
