Music is an important component of many successful addiction recovery programs. Songs often speak to the mind and soul the way no other type of therapy can. In recognition of the profound impact music can have on the recovery of someone ensnared in substance abuse, Visions Adolescent Treatment Centers is proud to announce they will sponsor the sixth annual Teen Music Contest. This is the second consecutive year that Visions has been involved financially in this important competition that allows young people to express the devastation of substance abuse in an original musical piece.
About the Teen Music Contest
The Teen Music Contest is a collaboration between the GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares. The two non-profits of The Recording Academy work with the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids’ Above the Influence Campaign to recognize teen musicians that find creative ways to express the toll drug abuse takes on users and their families. Contestants, which must be between the ages of 14 and 18, are asked to create a song or original music video depicting the influence of substance abuse on their lives.
Winners are chosen by a panel of judges selected by the GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares. Technical expertise is contributed by the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids’ Above the Influence Campaign. The winners of the Teen Music Contest will be invited to attend the GRAMMY Awards Backstage Experience, a tour that allows contest winners to see backstage prior to the GRAMMY Awards, as artists are rehearsing for the live program.
Monetary Awards Provided by Visions
Monetary awards are also given to the first, second and third-place winners, courtesy of Visions Adolescent Treatment Centers. First-place winners receive $500, second-place winners are awarded $250 and third-place recipients are given $100. Winners also receive a tour of The Village Recording Studio and their musical entries are posted on a variety of websites, including www.grammyfoundation.org, www.musicares.org and the website for the Vans Warped Tour.
Previous winners of this award have composed musical pieces talking about the challenges of those living with substance abusers. Other songs have dealt with the difficulty in standing up to peer pressure and substance use, while still others have communicated the importance of overcoming addiction to take control of life once again.
